San Bernardino Misses You

December 2, 2015; 6:35 p.m.-
According to the local police scanner, shots have been fired and law enforcement vehicles are rushing to the scene. One officer described it as a "very bad situation" on the scanner. "We need a bearcat," another officer said, requesting an armored vehicle. One suspect is down, and it is an active scene.

December 2, 2015; 7:02 p.m.-
At a news conference, the police chief reported that at least 14 people were killed in the shooting. There are two suspects with an unknown motive.
"This afternoon, three gunman walked into Inland Regional Center, a state-run facility for people with developmental disabilities located in San Bernardino, and began shooting. It's a developing tragedy, and neither suspects nor victims have been confirmed, but the Fire Reported on Twitter that there have been at least 20 victims. According to the New York Times, Inland Regional employs 670 staff members and serves more than 30,200 people."
The non-profit agency has a mission  to provide "generic services to normalize the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families by working to include them in the everyday routines and life rhythms of the community and by facilitating needed supports for them," according to their website and serves all ages, from infants to elderly.

What we know:

  • around 11 a.m., two assailants opened fire at a party in the facility
  • fourteen people were killed and seventeen wounded
  • police say that there was "some degree of planning" 
  • shooters were heavily armed and had tactical attire
  • after an afternoon car chase, two armed suspects were killed by the police: Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik
  • a third person was detained but may not be connected to the shooting
  • authorities are searching a home in nearby Redlands
  • anyone who suspects a relative was killed or injured can call a family assistance hotline at (800) 637-6653
