Hello... It's Me
Ashli Taylor, 15, grew up feeling just a little more grateful than most kids her own age.
As a baby, Ashli was diagnosed with a congenital birth defect that caused cirrhosis of the liver and received a life-saving transplant using part of her mother's liver when she was about a year old. But, being one years old, she wasn't able to thank the doctor who helped save her life. Well that is, until now.
This September, she opened up about her life-changing operation in a creative writing assignment for school. She wrote a letter to Dr. Robert Goldstein, the doctor from Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, who performed her surgery.
Dr. Goldstein was touched by Ashli's words.
"She moved me to the point where I wanted to give back," he told WFAA. "I wanted her to realize her words had a real lasting impression."
On Monday, he decided to hop in his car and drive two hours to surprise Ashli at Temple High School in Temple, Texas and pop in with a bouquet of flowers.
"Ashli?" he asked. "Guess who? Your mom's surgeon. You wrote me a letter, Dr. Goldstein."
He showed Ashli the two pages of the later he had in his back pocket, and the two shared an emotional hug.
"[Doctors] don't get a lot of 'thank-yous,'" Ashi told WFAA. "They need to know people appreciate their work."
That is good story for this time of the season (AKA Thanksgiving last week).
Is there anyone you are thankful for?
xoxo, Kaila
